Sung-Woo assists in enhancing the culture of academic data use across the university and promotes the use of advanced methods for predictive and evaluative purposes. Sung-Woo joined the University of Oregon in 2020 as a research associate professor in the College of Education, where he maintains an appointment, and joined the Office of the Provost in 2021. His main areas of interest are in machine learning applications in policy decision-making, research design and evaluation, and reforms in higher education. He has published numerous papers in higher education and public policy, including a study on community college students that has been cited nearly 1,800 times. Prior to joining the UO, he has previously served as a senior researcher at Abt Associates and the Community College Research Center at Teachers College, as well as a lecturer in applied statistics at The George Washington University and in research writing at Columbia University. He holds a BA in public policy and economics from Stanford University and a PhD in economics and education from Columbia University.
