Dr. Dorothy Miranda has helped superintendents, high school principals, and their staff across the nation confront systemic racial inequities in their advanced coursework programs. Leaning on data to inform action, she has helped school districts assess their racial equity climate, including implicit bias, racist narratives, and policies and practices that deny students of color and low-income students equitable access to advanced-level courses. Working with small and large districts, including the New York City Department of Education and the San Francisco Unified School District, her approach is one of learning. She believes everyone is in different places on their equity journey and must simultaneously be encouraged and challenged. One of her favorite parts of coaching is providing one-on-one feedback that allows leaders to be honest and vulnerable about their questions or experiences related to racial equity without judgment or disbelief.
Additionally, Dr. Miranda has conducted studies regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion challenges in faith-based organizations. Through qualitative analysis and review of the larger literature, she has provided actionable feedback for creating more equitable environments inside church communities.
Dr. Miranda began her career in higher education, representing students of color in the college admissions process. She has coached university staff and administration as they think through the creation of learning and working environments that meet the needs of the diverse students and staff that comprise them.
Dr. Miranda holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Washington and a Doctorate of Education in Learning and Leading in Organizations from Vanderbilt University’s Peabody College. She is also an ordained minister through King Jesus International Ministry’s Supernatural Global Network. In addition to her coaching work, she and her husband, Dr. Francisco Miranda, run a non-profit that provides free medical care in his home country of Nicaragua.
