The Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence’s (CMAE) mission is to promote student retention and persistence for historically underrepresented and underserved populations by developing and implementing programs and services that support retention, academic excellence, and success at the University of Oregon and beyond.

 

Compensation: $10.75/hour

Work Schedule: TBD

Hours per Week: 5-10

Start Date: As soon as possible.

Position Type: Part-time

Description

This position serves primarily as the first contact person for the Center for Multicultural Academic Excellence (CMAE) and will provide hospitable and welcoming attention to visitors. In addition to greeting and attending to CMAE visitors, the student services specialist will assist with all responsibilities of running the center (i.e.: working at the front desk, answering phone calls, scheduling advising appointments, making coffee, running errands, and helping/supervising students with printing, scanning, faxing, and other duties as assigned.) The student services specialist also serves as a liaison between the advisors and students in need of information and resources.

Duties include, but may not be limited to:

  • Provide front desk coverage which includes welcoming students and guests to the center
  • Receive, screen, and direct incoming calls and visitors (evaluate inquiries and take appropriate action using established procedures and good judgement)
  • Check visitors in using SSC or schedule appointments using SSC
  • Answer general inquiries about CMAE or UO resources; help students navigate campus by providing appropriate referrals or guidance to resources
  • Connect students to campus resources, academic support services, or co-curricular opportunities
  • Assist students with checking out/in items from the Resource Pond
  • Support CMAE staff members with programs and initiatives
  • Perform general clerical duties including answering phones, copying, filing, faxing, running office errands, sort recycling, monitoring office handout supplies
  • Keep lobby space and work space operational (stock supplies and clean desks when necessary)
  • Represent CMAE during assigned on/off campus events, projects or programs
  • Serve as a comfortable and continuous point of contact for other students or visitors
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications

Required

  • Current University of Oregon student (minimum of 8 credits)
  • The ability to maintain confidentiality and abide by Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
  • An interest in positively engaging with and helping others
  • A commitment to promoting equity and inclusion
  • Demonstrate good written and oral communication skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Outlook) and other computer software/programs including navigating websites and on-line programs
  • Ability to take initiative, prioritize, work on multiple projects simultaneously, and adequately meet deadlines
  • Function in a professional, friendly and service-oriented manner with experience working in an environment with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with all office team members, as well as internal and external office partners
  • Be able to attend student staff meetings twice a term (or as needed)

Preferred

  • A basic knowledge of organizations, programs and services related to CMAE or a willingness to be trained in such areas.
  • Good organizational skills and an ability to work independently and in teams
  • Knowledge of campus with regards to underrepresented populations, underserved groups, and diversity issues.
  • Ability or experience creating social media materials, such as flyers, media posts, etc.
