MISSION
The mission of the Black Strategies Group (BSG) is to support the professional development and social engagement of Black faculty, staff, and graduate students at the University of Oregon.
The following statements are key to our guiding principles and reflect our commitment to fostering an inclusive, empowering, and supportive community for our members.
We Believe in Advocacy and Policy Influence
BSG has a key role in advocating for policies and practices that directly impact Black faculty, staff, and students, ensuring that the institution is accountable for equity and inclusion.
We Believe in Mentorship and Professional Development
BSG advocates for mentorship programs and professional development opportunities tailored specifically to the needs of Black faculty and staff and commitment to long-term success.
We Believe in Collaborations and Partnerships
BSG is not alone in our work. We believe in the power of partnerships with other affinity groups, departments, alumni groups, allies, and external organizations that align with BSG’s mission to expand our impact and resources.
We Believe in Well-being and Mental Health
BSG recognizes the importance that a thriving community plays in the mental and emotional well-being of Black faculty, staff, and graduate students. We recognize the unique stressors members may face within the academic and professional environment and seek to provide resources and space for healing, support, and empowerment. Our goal is to create an environment where individuals can openly discuss challenges, share experiences, and find strength in community, fostering resilience and well-being for all.
We Believe in Enhancing the Black Student Experience
The BSG is committed to partnering with campus partners to be a resource and to advocate for Black students so that they can take full advantage of the opportunities and support needed to have a successful college career.
VISION
We envision a thriving campus community where Black faculty, staff, and students are fully supported and empowered to reach their highest potential. Through advocacy for intentional recruitment, promotion, and retention strategies by the UO, we aim to see Black representation across all levels of the university, including senior leadership. The BSG aspires to cultivate an environment where Black voices are respected, relationships are strengthened, and a sense of belonging is deeply rooted within the university system and community at-large.
